two weeks on la gomera

the path from alojera to arure

i’m now back in amsterdam after 2 weeks in alojera, the village you can see in the distance in the picture above. i did very little, which i suppose was the idea: a lot of sleeping and dreaming, a fair bit of swimming, walking in the hills, eating, listening to ‘radio clasica’ and people-watching.

i took the photo while walking along a section of the ‘gran ruta 132′, from alojera to valle gran rey. this day’s walking started and ended at sea level, but rose to around 900 metres in the middle. it took me 7 hours, which even by my standards is a bit slow!

it occured to me that the spot where i took the photo would be a grand place to watch the volcano on la palma erupt, as apparently it is sure to do some time. the appartment i was staying in on the beach would be less suitable.

going soon …

where i'll be before long

i’m very much looking forward to a couple of weeks in one of the appartments in this picture. this black-sand bay is in the canaries and faces into the setting sun. there’s nothing much here. what you see is just about all you get (or WYSIJAAYG, as we say). apart from the atlantic, of course. there’s a bar and a small restaurant/cafe a few metres behind the photographer and a small general store (fresh vegetables twice a week) a couple of hundred feet up the cliff and a quarter of a mile inland. bliss. i wonder if my new mobile will get a signal there?
